One of the most important decisions you'll make as an alpaca farmer is the network of experts you trust to guide your efforts. The quality of support you receive can save much more than just time. As an example, facilities layout for alpaca farms differ somewhat from other livestock. Important facility elements can be easily implemented early on but expensive to repair if not done correctly the first time. Subtle change to farm layout can be the difference between a farm that battles parasites vs. one that naturally breaks the parasite life-cycle. In many aspects of the alpaca farming lifestyle you'll find that experience up front will save both lots of time and money down the road.
I'll never forget the free kittens we picked up in a Walmart parking lot. We spent thousands in veterinary care just getting them healthy, and I learned a valuable lesson... how expensive *free* can be. Working with a farm built on good design, husbandry expertise, and healthy animals will ultimately save more money than the cost of the animals themselves.
